Summary
Sequel to the canon-divergent and early-Zuko-join fic "Catalyst," "Catastrophe" starts at the beginning of book 3 and follows the Gaang through to Day of Black Sun. Zuko continues to wrestle with his feelings toward the Fire Nation, his family, his friends, Katara, and the war as the time for the invasion arrives, and what it means to finally be “good.” Along the way, Team Avatar comes across friends and enemies, mentors and masters, and not all will escape unscathed.
This story hopes to explore themes introduced previously in both "Catalyst" and canon, as well as some darker material relative to the show. If you are okay with the maturity and violence in "Catalyst," you should be fine here as well.
Chapters will be released weekly with few exceptions, if any. Feedback, both positive and negative, is welcome via PM or public comment. Enjoy.

Summary
It was a brilliant plan, all things considered.
On paper and in the eyes of the public, they were a charming if oddly mismatched couple who somehow found love despite their differences. A fairy tale come to life, sighed the more romantic members of Ba Sing Se society.
So it was almost a shame that Katara's courtship with Prince Zuko was ultimately nothing more than an act - otherwise, they might have been a perfect match, if not the perfect partners in crime.

It turned out that dealing with diplomats, dignitaries, and other high ranking officials was just as hard as living in survival mode, camping somewhere new each night and water-bending to save her life. She hadn’t thought that life after the war would be just as tiring and somehow more confusing.

After Katara decides to spare Yon Rha, the gaang needs somewhere to go to hide from Azula and Ozai until Sozin's Comet arrives. Zuko knows just the place — but he first wants to take Katara there before going back to fetch the others. It's a special place that his mother once loved and after memories of Katara's mother being dredged up, Zuko decides to share it with her. //This story is canon compliant! It was recently pointed out that Zuko must've brought Katara to his family's Ember Island beach house first before going back to get the others, based on the fact he lands with Appa after Katara is still sitting on the docks and the others hop out with Zuko. What was love? Could it be love that Zuko had learned to feel for his sister's former servant during his exile? Did it even matter that much? A Fire Nation prince could never marry a woman who once swept the floors, could he?
Azula could never imagine that her former servant girl would pose a threat to her, but in fact the real threat to her and everything she has built is not Lan so much as the child growing in her womb. -

~Even now, while most of the group is trading war stories, Jet is both unbothered by his surroundings and vigilant. He feels safe beside Zuko with Duke fighting sleep in his lap. Yet, still, he refuses to let his guard down. It confuses more than just Zuko, but nobody says anything about it.
Jet decided to turn in shortly after Duke finally fell asleep in his arms. He kissed Zuko good night before he left. “Is he okay?” Toph asks as soon as he’s far enough to not overhear the conversation.
“What do you mean?” Aang asks. He’s one of the few members of the group that hadn’t noticed something was off about Jet.
“He’s on edge,” Suki comments. “Maybe someone should go check on him.”~Though many of them don't know him very well, most of the Gaang is worried about Jet.

“I know you’re there,” The prisoner said suddenly, and Sokka flinched. Probably male then. His voice was raspy, yet gentle in tone. It made him sound younger than Sokka imagined him to be. “What? You’re not being very subtle.”
Sokka felt his throat bob nervously. “Umm, sorry?”
The prisoner didn’t move, and Sokka chose his words carefully - he might as well try and make friendly with the dude, lower his chance of being murdered in his sleep. “I’m Sokka. I don’t suppose you have a name?”
There was a silence, and Sokka imagined he too was choosing his best option. “Lee.”
A nice, common Fire Nation name, if the scrolls he’d read were anything to go by. Also a lie, most likely, but Sokka wasn’t sure if he wanted to pry.
