Takes place in a no-apocalypse ‘verse. A meth lab in the Appalachians wants some product from out of state. There’s a mistake to sort out, a crossbow on the wall, and the man won’t give them a name.

There wasn’t a point when those sores healed poor, so poor they’d healed such a brown color they were practically black, ringed his neck like a chain. Then Mac stuck out his tongue, guzzled the rest, and hurled the can at the stoop so he could get back to work. Cain ignored the foam on his jeans, watching Mac go quiet except for some grumbled cussing, still and focused around the bike’s innards. Nearly tame.

The place was dark, genny off so it wouldn’t waste, and usually that didn’t bother him. Mac knew the yard well enough to walk through the pitch black to cross it; something about slogging over and fumbling to get it started put him on edge, wound him up in a way like it was really a hassle. Hours of driving, of looking at the same goddamn highway, left him antsy and wanting something out. A smoke wouldn’t really help, but he plugged a Winston into his mouth anyways and punched the cab light on to find a fucking lighter. Then he was chugging away, relaxing against the seat for the first time in half a day. Even his goddamn ass hurt, everything stiff and needle prickly.
Then his eyes landed on the other side of the cab, fixing themselves on Cain for no particular reason and staying for one.

Instead of shoving him into the folding chair in front of the computer Mac sat, and Cain was pulled into his lap. It was a struggle to fit, and Mac spread his legs wide and tucked Cain’s into the backs of his knees. Mac clamped him around the stomach and with his free hand wiggled the mouse, computer waking and giving them a shameless screen of what Cain had gotten up to in the middle of the night.

Mac was awake; in that same way some feral thing stretched and showed rolling, predatory muscle, and menaced sharp teeth with a yawn, he arched and rubbed his face. Mac grabbed a long-sleeved, layered shirt off a bed post and rucked up a pair of jeans off the floor, popping his hips up to get them past his ass. Instead of zipping his fly and cinching his belt Mac reached out for a fistful of flannel. Cain let it reel in and sit him on half-exposed lap; legs snared his own, a hand snaked around his hip and palmed his groin.
